What to look for in outdoor TVs

Outdoor TVs are purpose-built displays engineered with heavy-duty weatherproofing and ultra-bright panels to combat sunlight, rain, dust, and temperature extremes. Unlike regular indoor TVs, they feature specialized enclosures—typically rated IP54, IP55, or IP56—and anti-glare screen coatings. Selecting the right outdoor TV primarily depends on how much sunlight your viewing location receives.

Categorized by Sun Exposure
Outdoor TVs are strictly categorized into three setup environments:
  • Full Shade: Designed for fully covered patios, porches, or gazebos. They are roughly 50% brighter than standard indoor TVs.
  • Partial Sun: Ideal for areas with moving shadows, pergolas, or decks. They usually deliver between 700 to 1,000 nits of brightness to cut through moderate daytime glare.
  • Full Sun: Built for poolside areas or exposed walls with zero cover. They utilize massive backlights (1,500 to 3,500 nits) and heat-dispersing internal fans to prevent the screen from blacking out under direct solar heat.
Quick Buying Checklist
  • Audio: Outdoor environments absorb sound. Look for a TV with loud built-in drivers or pair your screen with a dedicated outdoor soundbar.
  • Siting: Confirm the physical weight before purchasing. Heavy-duty metal casings make outdoor TVs significantly heavier than regular models. Ensure your wall or structure can handle the load.
  • Warranty: Standard indoor TV warranties are immediately voided if the unit is mounted outside. Dedicated outdoor TVs include explicit environmental component coverage.
To help narrow down your choice, what kind of outdoor space are you setting up? Direct sunlight or if the screen will be safely tucked under a fully covered roof.
